Enneagrams are basically a system for understanding your personality, habits and behavior. This post will tell you what the nine types are all about through some of our favorite characters in TV and film.

What Are Enneagrams?

[define: enneagrams ]

Enneagrams are a set of personality archetypes that have been developed by multiple psychologists, psychiatrists, and thinkers over the years. The 9 enneagrams personify personality types, traits, virtues, defects, and psychological tendencies. For almost 20 years, the enneagram has explained how people think and why they act in certain ways.

How Understanding Your “Type” Can Boost Your Personal Growth

By understanding your enneagram type, you can understand your own way of seeing the world. It is very common for psychotherapists to use it, as well as in coaching and personal development. When you identify your own enneagram type, you deal with problems better, and become a better version of yourself. For example, you can devote a lot of time to changing your habits in search of personal fulfllment, but doing it without knowing your personality type will complicate things. The nine Enneagram types can be seen in your favorite films' characters to gain a deeper understanding of them.

Enneagram Type 1: The Idealist

If you’re an Enneagram type one, you can be defined as an idealistic type with solid principles. Type One is ethical and conscientious, possessing a strong sense of right and wrong. Hermione Granger is an excellent example of this type of enneagram. Like her, “Reformers” have high standards.

Reformers can be critical, anxiety-driven perfectionists when out of balance. At their best, though, Type Ones are wise, perceptive, realistic, noble, and morally heroic.

Enneagram Type 2: The Helper

It's safe to say you're caring and others-oriented if you're a Helper Enneagram type. Enneagram Types Two are understanding, sincere and kind. Like Eleven in Stranger Things, this Type is generous and self-sacrificing at their core, but they can also be sentimental, and protective. Helpers usually have trouble separating their own needs from those of their most trusted inner circle, and can struggle to take care of themselves. At their best, "Helpers" are generous, selfless, and act upon unconditional love and compassion.

Enneagram Type 3: The Achiever

If you find you're an Enneagram Type three, you're probably adaptable and success-oriented. Type Threes are self-assured, attractive, and charming. They're ambitious, competent, and energetic - like Jessica Pearson in Suits, or Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter they run the show and they know they’re good at what they do!

It is common for Achievers to worry about their image and what others think of them. At their best, the Achiever is self-accepting, authentic, everything they appear to be, a role model to inspire others.

Enneagram Type 4: The Individualist

Are you romantic and introspective? Maybe… a little witchy? You might be an Enneagram Type Four. Fours, known as “Individualists,” tend to be self-aware, perceptive, reserved, and quiet. They can also be capricious and shy. Like the Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter, this type usually removes themselves from others because they feel essentially flawed, developing their own way of life and occasionally plotting world domination.

Ideally, Fours are inspiring and highly creative, capable of creating a world aligned with their own vision and fearlessly taking on whatever comes their way.

Enneagram Type 5: The Investigator

Crime-solving sleuth Sherlock Holmes is the quintessential example of Enneagram Type Five. The Investigator is fiery and cerebral. Fives are quick-witted, insightful, and curious. They can focus on developing complex ideas and skills and thrive solving mysteries like this infamous and gutsy detective.

This enneagram type usually has problems with isolation, eccentricity, and nihilism. At their best, a Five is often a visionary trailblazer who sees the world in a whole new light.

Enneagram Type 6: The Loyalist

This enneagram type describes those who are committed and security-oriented. Type Sixes are trustworthy, hardworking, and responsible but can also be defensive, evasive, and high-strung. If you work until you're stressed and feel anger about it, maybe you're this Enneagram Type.

Black Widow from Avengers proves the value of The Loyalists at their best. In their best moments, Sixes are self-assured, independent, and support those who need it the most.

Enneagram Type 7: The Enthusiast

If you consider yourself the busy, happy-go-lucky, and productive type of person, maybe you’re an Enthusiast. Enneagram Type Sevens are versatile, optimistic, and spontaneous… like Frankie from Grace & Frankie can go a bit overboard in an effort to bring people together, but she uses inner sparkle often to charm her out of tricky situations.

This enneagram type usually has superficiality and impulsiveness problems. With work on themselves, Sevens can focus their gifts on worthy goals and are fun, highly capable, and highly appreciative.

Enneagram Type 8: The Challenger

Like Arya Stark, the fiery character of Game of Thrones, type Eights possess all of the qualities that make a hero or a villain. This Enneagram Type is self-assured, strong, and capable of asserting themselves. Protective and determined, they are also proud and overbearing - often leading others and defining their own success.

Challengers can be intimidating and aggressive. When they work on being their best version, healthy Eights control themselves, using their strength to improve the world around them, becoming heroic, magnanimous, and sometimes even historically great.

Enneagram Type 9: The Peacemaker

Peacemakers are those people who seem to know exactly what to say and do to diffuse any situation. While they are traditionally portrayed as easy-going types who just want everyone to get along, at their core, Peacemakers are skilled negotiators who value compromise for the benefit of the greater good. They possess confidence and prize social recognition for their role in brokering peace. Like the legendary political crisis manager Rue Bennett in Euphoria, Type Nines are highly skilled in getting things to run smoothly, without conflict.

When out of balance, Peacemakers tend to be overly passive on the one extreme, and maddeningly stubborn on the other. At their best, healthy Nine Types will stop at nothing to facilitate cohesion, even if it means sacrificing themselves to do so. Peacemakers typically unite people around a common goal or values.
