5 Things That Are Not Worth Your Time (+Positive Substitutes)

not worth your time

There is so much to do, isn’t there?

So many big tasks and nagging responsibilities that demand our attention.

And naturally, with our best intentions at heart, we foolishly opt-in. We try to do it all, taking on a manner of things that really aren’t worth our time or effort.

So how do we ensure we aren’t wasting our life on these things?

Simple, really.

Weed out all the BS, make peace with the things you need to do (but don’t want to), and learn how to prioritize what you actually want to do.

Here’s what is not worth your time and a few things that are.

Cut Out What’s Chewing Up Your Precious Time And Energy

1. Being Offended

Not everyone is going to like you and the opposite speaks true also. You aren’t going to like everybody else either.

We unintentionally offend each other all the time. That’s just a fact of life.

We weren’t all born the same, we haven’t all had the same experiences through our life, and our personalities vary widely.

And let’s be real, without our differences the world would be a mighty boring place.

Therefore, it’s not worth your time to be offended.

Instead, accept and respect people for who they are or the different opinions they may have. Try to realize that even if you are making just a fraction of people happy with the way that you are, you are doing mighty well.

A small group of really close friends is much better than a whole bunch of hollow friendships.

As they say, quality over quantity.

2. Allowing Work To Take Over Your Life

over worked

It seems that the old saying “I don’t live to work, I work to live” has been lost on many of us.

Myself included.

I used to work long hours, often leaving and returning home only when it was dark outside. Unfortunately, work had become a happiness drain hole and sucked everything I had. I found that I had no time for myself, my friends, nor my loved ones. And that led to some serious unhappiness.

That was until I realized the money, the time, and the effort wasn’t worth it.

Trust me, it ain’t worth dedicating every minute of your week to work. And it certainly isn’t worth dedicating 100% of your time to someone else’s dream, like your boss’ or the owner of the company you work for.

Instead, take back your time. Find work that fulfills you and doesn’t suck every ounce of your consciousness away from you. Dedicate time to your passions or finally go on that trip you’ve been promising yourself you would take for months.

Life isn’t all about making money. Life is about having experiences and connecting with yourself and others around you.

Enjoy it!

3. Obsessing Over Social Media Comments

social media comments

Unfortunately, there are angry and toxic people everywhere.

It’s just a fact of life.

And most of them congregate in the sometimes very unhealthy social media comment section, binding their time to find the smallest excuse to release some of their pent up frustration and hurt upon the world.

Plus, how many things are there to argue about?

It’s an endless and meaningless pursuit to try and convince everyone you are right all of the time.

Instead, stay mindful while using social media. Try to spend less time in the comment section and more time enjoying the content you are there for. Watch the video or view the image without giving in to the temptation to see who has a problem with it. You can’t please everyone and you certainly shouldn’t try. Remember, nobody wins a social media debate. Try saving your time and energy and win the comment battle with silence.

4. Waiting For The Right Time

biding time

What determines when something is the right time?

I definitely don’t know, do you?

It’s almost certainly never the right time to do anything. Or never the wrong time to do nothing.

In other words, just go for it!

Don’t wait around and let all your creative juices and best ideas go to waste. Take the bull by the horns, bite the bullet, and take the initiative.

If there is something on your mind that you’d love to accomplish then there’s no better time than the present.

5. Holding Grudges

holding a grudge

Sure, people are going to wrong you. Nobody comes outta life clean, we are all going to hurt people and people are going to hurt us.

And hey, it’s in our nature as humans to be unpredictable and erratic. I mean what are emotions for if you can’t throw them around once in a while.

So take it in stride. Realize that we are all going to make mistakes and holding a grudge towards someone who has made one is simply pointless.

Holding a grudge is like holding a hot coal. You’re the only one who is going to get burnt.

Final Thoughts

find happiness

Our time is precious, or energy finite, and our life short. Don’t waste your time on things that don’t matter.

Why not instead direct your attention and efforts towards things that you love. Your passions, your creativity, your love for something is waiting for you to explore it.

All you have to do is be conscious of how you spend your time.

That ain’t fake news, that’s a fact!
